What an awful day.

Now, I know that Tumblr folks are real big on pointing out just how sassy and diva like they think they are but here is a lesson: working in the theatre you are bound to come across your fair share of real life divas and my advice is do not become one! They are so annoying, so…

I attend two groups; the Saturday group that is fantastic for new starters and will get you used to being part of a committed team and the Wednesday group for people that would enjoy more serious drama. I never miss a rehearsal if your in the show then your in it….

Saturday group (the Christmas show, The Nutcracker)

I go to the Saturday group and think it is great, we do lots of games and at the moment are working towards our Christmas show, The Nutcracker and there is also singing and dancing involved as well as drama for people that enjoy them all, but don’t have to do them if not interested. I love singing and dancing and this group will always make sure your comfortable with what your doing. I have had great experiences with the Saturday group and love it .

Wednesday group (suffragettes, Deeds Not Words)

On a Wednesday I am doing the suffragettes which is fun but a serious drama and I am learning about women’s rights to vote which will help me in the future, it is cool because you can have fun but learn at the same time !!!

I really love the Wednesday drama group and would definitely recommend it to others. We have a laugh and practice really hard, I always look forward to it.

See you guys soon, Beth.

All the rest is showiness, arrogance and conceit” -Stella Adler

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

“To accomplish great things we must not only act,but also dream; not only play, but also believe” -Anatole France

“If you give audiences a chance they’ll do half your acting for you” -Katharine Hepburn

“Acting is not being emotional, but being able to express emotion” -Kate Reid

“The money is better in films and television. But in terms of acting, theatre is more rewarding” -Christopher Eccleston

“One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least” -Eugene Ionesco

“Acting is all about honesty. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made” -George Burns

“The most difficult character in comedy is that of the fool, and he must be no simpleton that plays that part” -Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra

“You need three things in the theatre - the play, the actors and the audience, and each must give something” -Kenneth Haigh

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep” -Scott Adams

“When you stand on the stage you must have a sense that you are addressing the whole world, and that what you say is so important the whole world must listen” -Stella Adler

“To be an actor you have to be a child” -Paul Newman

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up” -Pablo Picasso

“The problems of acting do not require that actors stop thinking, but that they find out what to think about” -Robert Cohen

“Acting is simple, joyous, care-free fun! Acting is child’s play. And yet acting must be a matter of life and death, too, all at once.”

“Acting is a sport. On stage you must be ready to move like a tennis player on his toes. Your concentration must be keen, your reflexes sharp; your body and mind are in top gear, the chase is on. Acting is energy. We would never have received the money if youth member Freya Tate had not written to them herself though. She took the initiative to send them a letter asking them if they would be able to support us with a donation and they offered us the money so a big thanks and well done all round and we are keen to make good use of it so that our members will benefit as soon as possible.

In other news, Helen Jagger, a very active member of our parent & friend committee has been in touch with Deebees who have offered some money toward starting our own tuck shop for youth members. This is great news and a big well done to Helen as she has been working on setting up the tuck shop for a while now. A massive thanks to Deebees for their kind donation!

Are these actors playing scrabble or rehearsing? Check out these lovely images from the rehearsal room of A Beginning, a Middle and an End by Sylvia Dow. This is Sylvia’s first play, which she’s penned at the age of 73, showing us it’s never too late to create a beautiful piece of theatre.

There’s been a strong critical reaction to the play, which has “a spareness and sense of fluid theatricality” according to the Guardian and is described as “graceful” by The Scotsman’s Joyce McMillan.

Enjoy these beautiful shots from the rehearsal room.

A Beginning, A Middle and An End is at the Traverse for one night only on Tuesday 18 September. Click here for more information and booking.

Anne Bonny (8 March 1702 – 22 April 1782) was an Irish woman who became a famous female pirate, operating in the Caribbean. What little is known of her life comes largely from A General History of the Pyrates.

At first, Anne’s family had a rough start in their new home. Her mother died shortly after they arrived in North America. Her father attempted to become an attorney there, but did not do well. Eventually, Anne’s father joined the more profitable merchant business and accumulated for the two of them a substantial fortune.

When Bonny was 13, she supposedly stabbed a servant girl in the stomach with a table knife. Bonny was a red-haired beauty and considered a good catch. She married a poor sailor and small-time pirate named James Bonny. James Bonny hoped to win possession of his father-in-law’s estate, but Anne was disowned by her father.

There is no evidence supporting the story that Anne Bonny started a fire on the plantation in retaliation, but it is known that sometime between 1714 and 1718, she and James Bonny moved to Nassau, on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. New Providence was then a sanctuary for English pirates. Many received a “King’s Pardon” or otherwise evaded the law. It is also true that after the arrival of Governor Woodes Rogers in the summer of 1718, James Bonny became an informant for the governor.

While in the Bahamas, Anne Bonny began mingling with pirates in the local taverns. She met John “Calico Jack” Rackham, captain of the pirate sloop Revenge, and became his mistress. They had a child in Cuba, who eventually took the name of Cunningham. Many different theories state that he was left with friends or simply abandoned. Anne rejoined Rackham and continued the pirate life, having divorced her husband and marrying Rackham while at sea. Anne and Rackham escaped to live together as pirates. Anne, Rackham, and Mary Read stole the Revenge, then at anchor in Nassau harbour, and put out to sea.

Rackham and the two women recruited a new crew. Over the next several months, they were successful as pirates, capturing many ships and bringing in an abundance of treasure. Anne did not disguise herself as a man aboard the Revenge as is often claimed. She took part in combat alongside the men, and the accounts of her exploits present her as competent, effective in combat, and respected by her shipmates. She and Mary Read’s name and gender were known to all from the start, including Governor Rogers, who named them in a “pirates wanted” circular published in the continent’s only newspaper, The Boston News-Letter. Although Bonny has historical renown as a female Caribbean pirate, she never commanded a ship of her own.

In October 1720, Rackham and his crew were attacked by a “King’s ship”, a sloop captained by Jonathan Barnet under a commission from the Governor of Jamaica. Most of Rackham’s pirates did not put up much resistance as many of them were too drunk to fight; other sources indicate it was at night and most of them were asleep. However, Read, Bonny, and an unknown man fought fiercely and managed to hold off Barnet’s troops for a short time. Rackham and his crew were taken to Jamaica, where they were convicted and sentenced by the Governor of Jamaica to be hanged. According to Johnson, Bonny’s last words to the imprisoned Rackham were that she was “sorry to see him there, but if he had fought like a Man, he need not have been hang’d like a Dog.”

After being sentenced, Read and Bonny both “pleaded their bellies”: asking for mercy because they were pregnant.

In accordance with English common law, both women received a temporary stay of execution until they gave birth. Read died in prison, most likely from a fever, though it has been alleged that she died during childbirth.

There is no historical record of Bonny’s release or of her execution. This has fed speculation that her father ransomed her; that she might have returned to her husband, or even that she resumed a life of piracy under a new identity.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that “Evidence provided by the descendants of Anne Bonny suggests that her father managed to secure her release from jail and bring her back to Charles Town, South Carolina, where she gave birth to Rackham’s second child. On December 21, 1721 she married a local man, Joseph Burleigh, and they had 10 children. She died in South Carolina, a respectable woman, at the age of eighty on April 22, 1782. She was buried on April 24, 1782. According to Sherman Carmichael’sForgotten Tales of South Carolina, she is buried in the York County Churchyard in York County, Virginia.

Some claim that she was smuggled away by her father, and that this was made possible by his far reaching and favorable merchant connections. This is a probable solution to the mystery. After all, her father’s business connections had saved Anne a number of times before. Rackham’s crew spent a lot of time in Jamaica and the surrounding area. Although the crew, including Anne, was discovered or caught on a number of occasions, Bonny always escaped punishment and harm. This was probably because of her father’s business contacts in Jamaica.

There is only one place in the world where I love to be. The strangest part is that this place is where I am the least myself and not at all alone. It’s onstage.
